UCI (and SCONCE) is among the first universities in the nation
to be designated, by the National Security Agency (NSA), as a
"National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance
Research" (CAE-Research) for academic years 2008-2013.

SCONCE and the Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems
are awarded a $200,000 unrestricted gift from Experian. This gift
will be used to establish a research program in cyber-fraud detection
and prevention.

Stanislaw Jarecki, has been awarded a highly-selective
$450,000 NSF CAREER research grant on the topic
of Secure Multi-Party Protocols. The goal of this research is to design
cryptographic algorithms for a variety of secure multi-party
tasks, including private authentication schemes, aggregate signatures,
group key agreement schemes, and threshold and
proactive crypto-systems.

Athina Markopoulou, has been awarded a prestigious
CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.
The five-year, $450,000 grant will further her research in Network
Coding for the Internet which has numerous applications,
including network security and multimedia delivery.

Professor Kobsa receives Google Research Award:
Professor Alfred Kobsa received a 2007 Google Research Award in the
amount of $50,000, to support his research on compliance with disparate
privacy laws and user privacy preferences.
